Lawyer Dutch Francis faces an impossible situation—search for your missing wife or defend your high-profile client
Dutch Francis is a defense attorney in the case of a judge accused of killing his wife. Just as the trial is about to begin, Ginnie Turner, Dutch's wife and TV news broadcaster, goes missing.
Under extreme duress, Dutch tries to extricate himself as the judge's attorney—or at least postpone the trial. The judge insists that the trial proceed without delay and that Dutch remain his attorney.
Exhausted by the murder trial, Dutch confronts an ineffectual police department, suspicious that he is involved in his wife's disappearance. He takes matters into his own hands as he struggles to balance both responsibilities—the trial and finding his wife—pushing him to the brink of losing everything he holds dear.
At first Dutch suspects that Ginnie was kidnapped in retaliation for her recent stories about sex scandals. But after receiving bits of her in the mail—fingernails, hair—he realizes the kidnapper's intent may be to punish him.
Could his defense of the judge be the reason?
Fans of John Grisham and Scott Turow will love the courtroom drama

In Murphy’s implausible third novel featuring Manchester, N.H., attorney Dutch Francis (after Alibi), Dutch’s TV newscaster wife, Ginnie Turner, covers her husband’s latest high-profile case, despite the conflict of interest. Dutch is defending Superior Court Judge Carlos Garcia against charges he murdered his wife by poisoning some takeout Thai food. When someone kidnaps Ginnie without issuing any demands, Garcia insists that he still wants Dutch representing him, and the presiding judge denies the lawyer’s request to be relieved. Dutch juggles poking holes in the prosecution’s case—the evidence against Garcia is thin and circumstantial—with his search for Ginnie, even as one of the investigating cops views him as the prime suspect in her disappearance. The pressure mounts as Dutch gets hair and nail clippings he identifies as Ginnie’s in the mail. At one point, he rules out a possible culprit because, when he calls out Ginnie’s name at the suspect’s house, he gets no response. The execution falls short of the book’s dramatic setup. Hopefully, Murphy will do better next time.

Dutch Francis left life as a big-city corporate lawyer and moved with his wife, Ginnie, to New Hampshire. Ginnie works at the local TV station, and Dutch is doing what he's always wanted to do: defend the little guy. His latest client, Judge Carlos Garcia, accused of killing his wife, is no little guy, but Dutch takes the case after Garcia declares he'll accept no other lawyer. But on the day the trial begins, Ginnie disappears. Frantic, Dutch asks the court for a temporary adjournment, but the judge refuses. Convinced the cops are moving too slowly, he hires a PI to help with the search, but as they dig for answers, Dutch receives a letter from the kidnapper saying he plans to kill Ginnie. Can Dutch find his wife before she dies? A detailed picture of how the American legal system works contrasts nicely with the mounting suspense of Dutch's desperate search for his wife. Legal-thriller fans should add Murphy to their lists of authors to watch.
