Grades 8-10 The sensation is not pleasant. First Kaylee tries to choke back a scream of terror. Then waves of grief wash over her and the world turns foggy gray. Oh, and after that, someone near her dies. Worse, the most recent casualties are lovely high-schoolers, just like Kaylee, who has no real idea what is going on until the (handsome!) Nash explains that she is a bean sidhe, or banshee, who can foretell death. Nash knows all this because hes a bean sidhe too. As girls continue to drop dead, Kaylee and Nash must figure out why and what theyre going to do about it. Perhaps fun isnt the right word for a new series called Soul Screamers, but this features some sharp dialogue and hot romance, and finds clever ways to explain the banshee experience. While not as atmospheric as the Twilight series, fans of those vampires will enjoy this new crop of otherworldly beings.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
