When Betsy Taylor, Queen of the Vampires, crosses the finish line of her series next year, will she be walking tall in her Manolos, or will she be limping wearily? What was once fresh in Davidson’s groundbreaking urban fantasy series now reads as stale in this worn-out 14th installment (after Undead and Unwary), even though Davidson continues to stay current with pop culture references and maintains her deft hand at humor. Betsy attempts to modernize hell—in the form of the Mall of America—while keeping her consort out of it and handling her half-sister, the former Antichrist, a social media maven who is much more dangerous without her powers. The wit and zaniness fails to cover up the novel’s slow pacing, and many scenes are just punch lines. Agent: Evan Gregory, Ethan Ellenberg Literary

Following Undead and Unwary (2014), the fourteenth entry in Davidson's series finds Betsy Taylor taking on two roles. Not only is she queen of the vampires (with the hunky husband and to-die-for shoes to go with the title), she's also now in charge of Hell. Besides the fact that she hasn't gotten the daunting time difference between home and hell sorted out, she's way too busy adoring Jessica's as-yet-unnamed weird babies and having hot-monkey sex with Eric. To help her manage her time, she puts together a group of councilors to assist her in Hell, where she's switching things up by rewriting the 10 commandments and the seven deadly sins. Just when she's just about got things figured out, her step-sister, aka Spawn of Satan, decides to out vampires to prove there is a God and earn her way out of her destiny. Breezy dialogue, laugh-out-loud humor, and just enough romance make this a sure bet for die-hard fans.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
