Heart of Darkness - The Original Classic Edition by Joseph Conrad is written in the English language. Before the books first published, it appeared as a three-part series in Blackwood's Magazine. The novel is widely regarded as a significant work of English literature. The book tells the tale of Charles Marlow, an Englishman who took a foreign assignment from a Belgian trading company as a ferry-boat captain in Africa. Heart of Darkness exposes the dark side of European colonization while exploring the three levels of darkness that the main character, Marlow encounters. Which are the darkness of the Congo wilderness, the darkness of the Europeans' cruel treatment of the natives and the unfathomable darkness within every human being for committing heinous acts of evil. Although Conrad does not give the name of the river, at the time of writing the Congo Free State, the location of the large and important Congo River, was a private colony of Belgium's King Leopold II. Marlow has been employed to transport ivory downriver. However, his more pressing assignment is to return Kurtz, another ivory trader with a bad reputation, to civilization as a cover-up. Joseph Conrad was a Polish British novelist, who became a British subject in 1886 after fleeing his home country of Ukraine, Russia. He was regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English, even though it was his second language. He wrote stories and novels, predominantly with a nautical or seaboard setting, with a common theme being the human spirit by the demands of duty and honour. He was a very impressionable man with many talents for writing.
