Grades 2-4 The Science of Disgusting Habits series (2 titles) takes a broad view of what constitutes disgusting, but dives into its crowd-pleasing topic with gusto. What links behaviors from nail-chomping to scab-picking to peeing in a pool is less social stigma, more the danger of spreading dangerous bacteria or parasitic worms. Garstecki offers techniques for proper grooming and general but reasonably plausible suggestions for getting rid of bad habits, but what carries this beyond standard-issue gross-out nonfiction is the almost subversive suggestion that some of these behaviors have their positive sides?eating boogers, for instance, could help boost one's immune system. Monroe's cartoon illustrations are another plus, as she portrays a multiethnic cast of children sneezing juicily, looking ill, demonstrating the toilet-seat-to-fingertip pinworm chain, and like helpful activities. Plenty to chew on here.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
