Grades 4-7 Would-be prestidigitators will find plenty of audience-mystifying feats in this collection of simple card/dice/ribbon/etc. tricks. The opening act is a riffle of card tricks that play off a chosen key card or involve elementary legerdemain. What follows is a demonstration of mathematical magic with dice, disappearing knots, number tricks, some more-or-less harmless pranks, and illusions. A final set probably requires a visit to a magic shopworth it for the magic wand up the nose trick alonebut the only significant expense here is in practice time. Each trick features a brief materials list, step-by-step directions, and a mix of diagrams and cartoons of triumphant young magicians. The author offers only general advice about developing an act or a line of patter, but occasional pro tips pop up in side boxes, such as the value of deliberately messing up from time to time. Groanworthy jokes ( What's the best thing to put in a pie? Your teeth ) are interspersed to provide routine starting points. All in all, a good source of starter tricks.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
