"Second mothers,""independent spirits,""New York aunts,""role models,""avenging angels"--aunties of all sorts get their due in this medley of personal essays on the bond between aunts, nieces and nephews. The contributors--who are, for the most part, lesser-known journalists, poets, artists, novelists, professors and critics--represent a diverse range of cultures, from African American to Irish Catholic to South Asian. Sturgis, who edits Essence.com, writes of her"special connection" with her Aunt Mildred, a woman who"helped to validate my aspirations when I wasn't sure I was entitled to them." In another essay,"Aunt Moe Gets Reborn," elementary school teacher Dennis Donoghue writes about his newly widowed aunt's determination to find love again. A few of the authors share poems and recipes.
