Chain maille patterns and weaves that take jewelry design into new frontiers!
Jewelry artists will enjoy a collection of new, less-common weaves and challenging projects that inspire and educate.
Author Karen Karon begins by reviewing basic chain maille weaves in order to set the stage for the more complex weaves in this book. She explains techniques needed when working beyond the basics: methods for closing a weave, working with micro rings, working large scale, and using alternative materials in weaves. The book is then divided into 4 sections, each devoted to a particular type of weave: new Persian weaves, Elf-based weaves, Hybrid weaves, and Scale Maille weaves that incorporate sheet metal scales into traditional weaves for a striking effect. Sprinkled throughout the illustrated step-by-step instructions for each weave technique are valuable tips from Karen to help ensure a beautiful finished piece.

Karon (Chain Maille Jewelry Workshop) explores the world of chain maille beyond the basic weaves in this collection of intermediate-to-advanced level jewelry-making projects. After a brief review of the European four-in-one and Half-Persian three-in-one weaves, Karon considers variations on Persian weaves, elf weaves, and hybrid weaves (which combine weaves from different groups). A chapter dedicated to scale maille--petal-like metal pieces that can be woven into patterns resembling fish scales--is included. For each weave, a summary and step-by-step directions are provided, describing the weave's uses and supplying a jump ring chart listing sizes and counts. Useful tips are interspersed throughout and a number of intricate projects (beyond the basic flat bracelets that can be made for practice) are offered. VERDICT For experienced jewelry makers, since basic chain maille techniques such as opening and closing jump rings properly are not covered. Those looking to go beyond the techniques addressed in most related books will find a wealth of information within these pages.
