The American-led global order has been increasingly challenged by Chinese assertiveness and Russian revanchism. As we enter this new era of great-power competition, Canadians tend to assume that the United States will continue to provide global leadership for the West.
Canada Alone sketches the more dystopian future that is likely to result when the illiberal, anti-democratic, and authoritarian Make America Great Again movement regains power. Under the twin stresses of a reinvigorated America First policy and the purposeful abandonment of American global leadership, the West will likely fracture, leaving Canadians all alone with an increasingly dysfunctional United States. Canada Alone outlines what Canadians will need to navigate this deeply unfamiliar post-American world.

Nossal (political studies, Queen's Univ.; Charlie Foxtrot: Fixing Defence Procurement in Canada) seeks to explain what may happen to Canada and how it should prepare if another "America First" Republican (whether Trump or someone else) is elected president of the United States in 2024. This book surveys the state of global affairs in early 2023 and makes informed predictions. Nossal surmises that in 2024 the U.S. could move more sharply towards isolationism, reduction of trade agreements, and abandonment of geostrategic political alliances, all while China and Russia simultaneously seek to expand their global power. He posits that Canada's comfortable place under the wing of the U.S. could disappear, a plausible scenario that he implores Canada to take this seriously. The book calls for Canadians to recognize what the author calls the political seepage northward of MAGA sentiments and to get ready for more contentious trade disputes, while also becoming less dependent on trade with the U.S. Nossal further recommends that Canada start spending more on its own military defense, seriously review its current foreign policy, and seek alliances with other like-minded countries in the world. VERDICT Recommended for all political science and global studies collections.--Karen Bordonaro
